Race Report: Newport Mesa 10K

Today I participated in the Newport Mesa 10K. The course is essentially a 3 mile out-and-back segment (completed once for the 5K, and twice for the 10K) around Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. I was honestly a little worried about how I would perform. My hip was swill in pain from my crash last Sunday, and I was struggling to hold 8:00/mile the previous day (though my overall training suggested a pace of 5:50/mile over this course and distance).

A Week in Training: February 25 – March 4

Unfortunately, I crashed my bike on February 24 just after completing UCSD’s Tritonman Triathlon. This caused a considerable amount of pain in my right hip when I tried to swim the following day. It also caused pain when I tried running anything faster than a 6:30/mi pace. I decided to drop my swim training for the week and take it easy on the run, while putting out some decent mileage on the bike.

Here is a summary of my training week:

  • Swimming: 0 yards
  • Cycling: 225 miles
  • Running: 26 miles
  • Total: 251 miles (~11,600 calories burned)

Race Report: Laguna Niguel Triathlon

image

Today I competed in the Laguna Niguel Triathlon! The race venue was literally four miles from my neighborhood, though I never took the time to check out the course beforehand. This was a “reverse Triathlon”, and thus the event breakdown was as follows: a 5km (3.1-mile) run, a 17km (10.6-mile) cycle, and a 150 meter pool swim. I picked this event for the convenience of its location and for the fact that the swim leg was almost negligible in completion time relative to the run and cycle legs.

Race Report: TCSD Duathlon “Black Mountain”

image

This Saturday I participated in a winter Duathlon put on by the Triathlon Club of San Diego. The race venue was located at a community park in a region called Black Mountain. The race would consist of a 2.5-mile run, a 20km (12.4 mile) cycle, and close with a 2-mile run. Because I was competing in two races this weekend, I took it easy on Saturday to save my legs for the triathlon the following day.
