A Week in Training: March 18 – March 24

Installed my new Aero Disc Cover!

This week of training was quite a bit better than the last couple of weeks. I was more busy than usual, but I was able to put in another decent week of cycling to prepare me for Ironman 70.3 Oceanside next weekend.

Here is a summary of my training week:

  • Swimming: 1000 yards
  • Cycling: 190 miles
  • Running: 28 miles
  • Total: 218 miles (~10,400 calories burned)

Race Report: TCSD March Triathlon

Today, I executed a near-perfect race at TCSD’s first triathlon of the season. The event was situated at Fiesta Island, and consisted of (what would be) a 1000 yard (~0.57 mile) swim, a 20km (12.4 mile) cycle through the southern loop of the island, and a 4 mile run through the northern loop of the island. This was an excellent opportunity for me to redeem myself from a poor performance at last month’s Tritonman Triathlon (also located on Fiesta Island) where I nearly froze to death.

Race Report: Concordia University 5K

Concordia University put on a “St. Patrick’s Day” 5K today in an effort to raise funds for the school’s cross country and track programs. I didn’t plan on doing this event until I realized that the Coaster 10K was sold out, and I really wanted to get in another stand-alone running event to gauge my current fitness. Interestingly enough, this was my first legitimate 5K (3.1 miles), though I ran 3-mile races all the time in high school cross country (my last race was in November 2011).

A Week in Training: March 11 – March 17

Finally got a pair of cycling shoes made for triathlons!

This week was pretty similar to the last two. I put in a decent amount of bike mileage while holding off on the swimming and running to let my hip recover. By the end of the week, I felt comfortable enough to do two races: a duathlon and a 5K, the latter of which I ran at a 5:32/mile pace without any pain in my hip. This gives me the heads up to began ramping up my run mileage again and to start putting out time in the pool next week.

Here is a summary of my training week:

  • Swimming: 0 yards
  • Cycling: 215 miles
  • Running: 30 miles
  • Total: 245 miles (~11,600 calories burned)

A Week in Training: March 4 – March 10

I got my first pair of racing flats, installing elastic laces to make for fast transitions.

On paper, this week looks very poor in terms of training. I turned 18 over the weekend and was too busy to get many workouts in. However, this provided an excellent opportunity for me to rest my hip. I’m taking extra efforts to remain injury free, so I’m not too disappointed with my lack of volume this week. I will probably take next week easy as well before ramping my volume back up, especially in running and swimming. Here is a summary of my training week:

  • Swimming: 0 yards
  • Cycling: 70 miles
  • Running: 23 miles
  • Total: 93 miles (~5,100 calories burned)

Race Report: Newport Mesa 10K

Today I participated in the Newport Mesa 10K. The course is essentially a 3 mile out-and-back segment (completed once for the 5K, and twice for the 10K) around Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. I was honestly a little worried about how I would perform. My hip was swill in pain from my crash last Sunday, and I was struggling to hold 8:00/mile the previous day (though my overall training suggested a pace of 5:50/mile over this course and distance).
